Lantern from scrap card

Post by lyndaejane on Tue 20 Dec 2016 - 18:47

This is the lantern I made for my friend Irene, from the scrap card she had given me. She had used the rectangles of black card to punch out two scalloped squares from each piece, so I started by finding two rectangles where the squares had virtually the same gap between them.

I folded them halfway between the squares, then evened up each side, leaving enough for a flap to glue one to the the other: I also scored about half and inch from the bottom, so that I could fold those parts under to hold a base. I made a base of black card (recycled) from my stash, in the middle of which I die-cut a circle. I then cut an inch off a tube from the middle of a kitchen towel roll, snipping up halfway in several places round the tube and covering the circular part with silver paper (recycled). I then pushed the circular part of the tube through the base and glued the 'legs' underneath, then glued the whole base to the folded-under pieces from the sides. Then I glued on a very strong piece of (recycled) black card underneath the base, to support the whole thing. I cut four pieces of leftover vellum and glued them behind the square apertures, and then I cut up two more of the rectangles with the scalloped squares in so that I could glue them inside the lantern to cover up where the edges of the vellum were. An LED candle (new) finished the job.

Took a while to make, but I do seem to love a challenge these days.

I especially like making things for people out of the recycled stuff they've given me. I was really stumped by these bits of cardboard, short of using odd strips as a mount for a greeting.
