Tin Can Garden lanterns

Post by thriftycrafter on Sat 3 May 2014 - 21:44

This is what we made at the workshop I nearly didn't turn up for!

You need;
cans
wire
sand/water- frozen in cans
heavy duty tape
outdoor/metal spray paint
3 nails of varying thickness, a hammer
paper for template, sellotape
nightlight/candle
A cup of tea and slice of cake

Wash out your can, those with the white 'lining' are particularly effective at reflecting light. Ring pulled cans have a nice clean edge.

Fill with water and freeze or
fill with sand and use black nasty or duck tape over the top. (the demonstrator also put a plastic can top on, not sure why)
we had the option of pre-printed templates,

Cut paper to the size of the outside of the tin (remembering that the upper part of the tin will have the light coming through - I forgot on my first one and placed my template low, so I added a ring of dots at the top later) and make a template using dots, sellotape to the tin.

Using a narrow nail, with a good strike, punch through the pattern and tin, for larger holes then re-punch with a medium nail, and for even larger holes with a wide nail
Make a hole each side at the top for a hanging wire

peel off the template, empty the can, spray paint with plasticote type paint
add a hanging loop made by bending a piece of wire, making a loop by twisting around a pen, and bend back the ends then place through the can.
Add nightlight, wine and friends...

We all made 2 in 2 hours with a cuppa and cake, and a little queue for the painting, so they're pretty quick.

Oh yes. That is a fun idea. Lots of those would look smashing dotted around the garden at night.
They're lovely Karelyn.

Had seen these before but never know anyone who'd actually done one, Karelyn: looks lovely and I like the colours. Hopefully these will take pride of place in the new conservatory?
