Care home project, help please

Post by thriftycrafter on Thu 1 May 2014 - 20:43

I volunteered to make an entry for the Suffolk Show (WI). The criteria as follows
The title of the class is; Memory books for care homes.
Choose a theme for example sport, holidays, gardens and create a visually stimulating picture book.

There are more details but I had in mind a general memory book with lots of feely bits such as coins which could be handled, haberdashery items etc.
What I am stumped most with is the theme though. I was thinking general (random) things like page on buses, work, with payslips perhaps, post offices, phone boxes etc. Not sure that's really what they're looking for, more visual than feely but aargh, if I lose a point but it's useful I'm happy with that.
Mine will be for a home for the elderly, it's to be A4.

I'm trying to come up with a theme that has lots of broad scope, I feel the above title suggestions would limit the audience a bit.
So I think that could encompass up to date items, as long as I put for example a mangle as the oldest, twin tub, then a modern washer all on the same page.

Any ideas for titles/a topic? Please.

We had one of those.

That would narrow the field to household objects perhaps, but still give lots of scope.
What do you think?

I think it's a great idea Karelyn. Also, bearing in mind that they're elderly, they probably lived through the war, so you could maybe do pages based around what was available at that time and maybe the fashions of the time. Old women particularly like to remember how gorgeous they looked when they were younger.

Yes, and it's a phrase that lots of people can relate to. We often go to museums and say the same thing!

No, I'm not putting my 'to do' list here, that would be far to organised, PLUS I would have to keep it up to date Laughing

Fantastic title, Karelyn, and ,as you say, it's what everyone will relate to. Like the idea of touchy feely as well.

it is a great title its one I hear a lot at the care home along with " I remember that"
since being involved with the care home mil is in and chatting to the residents the topic that gets them excited the most is their pets and gardens .this can cover flowers to allotments then lead on to cooking and kitchen equipment so can cover a whole spectrum of things in a short conversation .
knitting and sewing is another topic the ladies love to talk about.
good luck with it , are they going to go to care homes when finished?

That's brilliant girls thanks. I was thinking of avoiding war time stuff as I often hear the older ladies at WI saying; Just how old do they think we are? But I'll see what I come up with, if they don't remember it I expect they'll have had older families members who did.

Not at all Lorraine, liking the fashions idea a lot and wondering how old people I know really are, perhaps they just hate the sing songs lol

You're right, Alison: my Godmother used to tell us (she was in a home) that it was "all old people" in there, and she must have been nearly 90 herself!

One of Hubbys aunts used to organise trips out and game afternoon for all the old folks in the home near her, her words, and she was 80+, used to make her daughter and me laugh.
