Working with Fimo - what do I need, please?

Post by lyndaejane on Tue 10 Apr 2012 - 18:01

Jewellery Group this week is using Fimo, so I sent for some (a four-colour kit with varnish). Am guessing the tutor will probably bring equipment, but is there anything I could take for working on/with? Think I have the blade somewhere (acquired one at the PaperArtsy classes when we were stamping on clay), but presumably we will need a rolling-pin-type thing and maybe a piece of glass/tile/acrylic sheet to work on?

Imagine it will only be fairly basic stuff (we're only there for 2 hours): any help would be appreciated.

Yep, a roller - preferably acrylic so it doesn't stick. If anybody has a pasta machine there though, try and use that.
Cutters or moulds depending on what you're going to be doing.
A tile is good for baking on. If you're making beads and haven't got a proper bead baker then you can rest them on concertinaed bits of card.
Silicone, or non stick craft sheet, for working on.

I could give you a list a mile long if you wanted to get all the stuff I've got, lol but doubt it yet. Mr Green

Thanks, Lorraine - as I said, only the basics and I think I can rustle up things like the silicone sheet and something to roll with.

Watch out if you have asthmatics though it's quite smelly/fumey when baking. Or will you do that at home? It takes a while to cool.

Suspect we will bake at home, Karelyn, as I imagine the two hours will be taken up just making the basic beads! But thanks for the tip.

I worked with Fimo for many years but never made jewellery.
Would be nice to see photos.
