Re: The Magic of China
Well China, Goaty, is one of those places where every prospect pleases. You pop round a corner in a small out of the way village and find some spectacular piece of architecture, or a chap asleep on a concrete bench as in the pic. Some of the places I went to on this visit were without water, electricity, any form of comfort, yet the people were always happy and smiling. If it pours with rain, they simply take off their shoes so they don't get spoiled. The mothers wash their kids in the rain, or in the river (which often seems dirtier than the child itself). The building with all the little drawers was the apothecary - where they brew up all kinds of Chinese medicine in a room where not only the apothecary works, but the wife cooks, the kids do their painted letters, the chickens and pig runs round the floor and the "patients" join in the lunch if it is cooked in time. I am totally captivated by China and want to return time and time again for longer and longer trips. Only trouble is, although it is really dirt cheap once you get there (a massive double suite in a five star hotel in Wuyi Shan was only £20 full board!!!) the cost of the visa if you travel alone is prohibitive. It cost me £100 this time, but goes up and up every time. And thank you for asking!! xxx

Re: The Magic of China
No good asking Mia to come .... she only likes luxury and clean places and always says she doesn't want to go to anywhere even vaguely resembling anything ending in a "stan" !!! I love travelling alone and it makes me proud to think I can do it, just as my Ken wanted me to continue to do.

I'd come with you, Patty. I don't mind a bit of muck and tat.

Re: The Magic of China
Lovely LO, I like the buttons and the hinge. Travelling to under developed countries doesn't hold any appeal for me either but it's a moot point as I don't have the money anyway, I'd go on my own though without a problem
