the Cats of La Romieu

Post by Guest on Sat 31 Oct 2009 - 9:21

There's a lovely little legend about these cats, which is tucked into the hidden journalling on this page.

Here's the righthand page

And here's the double layout

That is gorgeous, I love the B?W with just a splash of turquoise, and all those flourishes, yum.
Tell us more about the legend.

A fantastic double LO. It looks so clean cut with the monotone
shades and a dash of colour. What a great subject.

Well they are all stone replicas of the cats, yes in France, a small village which I cannot remember where!!! My maps are all in France of course. There were dozens of these little stone statues on ledges, in doorways, even on those ceramic street signs as in the LO - it was a ceramic rectangle with the corner "turned back" and a little cat peeking out. They were on the pavements, in cafes, even on the kerbside! I have the legend written out so will put it in here if I can as it is really lovely ... and very ancient.

This is the legend of the cats in La Romieu.

In 1338, in a Gascon village called LA ROMIEU, Vincent and Mariette lived contentedly. He was a woodman and his wife often accompanied him into the forest to make up bundles of faggots. They had been married for 3 years when Mariette gave birth to a little girl, whom they called Angeline. As she grew up, Angeline showed a great affection for cats and there was always one or two around her which at night even slept in her bed.

In 1342 and the 2 years that followed, the winters were harsh and the springs and summers so wet that it was impossible to sow crops. There followed a great famine and the inhabitants soon had nothing to eat. They thought of the numerous cats in the village and set about catching them to eat them until they had all gone. Angeline's parents, knowing how much she loved hers, allowed her to keep a male and female cat on the condition she hid them well, as the neighbours would gladly kill them. Angeline, therefore, shut her two cats in the attic by day and at night she let them out to hunt. But the famine grew worse and many villagers died. Angeline and her parents survived by collecting roots in the woods and sometimes they found mushrooms but it was hardly sufficient. Weakened by hunger, they managed somehow to survive this terrible period and better times finally came, allowing them to harvest what they needed to live.

But in La Romieu where the cats had disappeared, the rats proliferated to a point where the crops were once again threatened. Angeline had been able to hide her cats in the attic and they had produced about 20 kittens. The villagers wrung their hands over the damage caused by the rats. Angeline announced that she was going to release some 20 cats which the inhabitants would be able to adopt. The rats rapidly disappeared but Angeline soon began to look more and more like one of the cats and her ears gradually transformed into the ears of a cat.

La Romieu has little statues of cats all around the village to this day.
