Wisteria floribunda Violacea Plena Aka. 'Double Black Dragon'

Post by kt_dragonfly on Fri 10 Apr 2009 - 11:07

Would this plant just end up going rampant on my garden??

It's like any other plant, Kate. It won't go wild if you don't let it.

It looks fairly well contained but you should get some care instructions so you know when to cut it down. It's a beautiful plant, I wouldn't mind one myself. Mr Green

They can get big, they usually grow on a wall or over trellis etc. You would need to trim it at the right time of year. They are beautiful though the flowers aren't there for very long.

We have had one planted since we have been in this house. It has not gone too mad yet but has not yet flowered. Anyone know how long this takes? It has been in the ground for more than 3 years now

I thought they were usually climbing plants Kate, is that what you want and yes they do get big. My grandad had one it was huge, used to cover the wall of his house.

This isnt a good choice really because it is a) a climber and b) only flowers for 3 weeks then nothing and c) is definitely not 'easy'.

Regarding non flowering, with wisterias, the only reliable one is wisteria sinensis and even then you MUST buy one that is already in flower because then you are guaranteed it will. Patty has had about 20 goes including cuttings of my flowering one and to no avail, they are tricky and you usually pay extra for one that is in flower for this reason.

sadly I think not Jan... they are notorious for it and cuttings dont work because they are effectively hybrids. There is supposed to be a way of doing it from the roots but Patty tried that to and it still didnt work.

Well I seem to have been very fortunate. My wisteria has produced a couple of weedy flowers. Nothing much but I am sure that in the coming years there will be more and better formed flowers.

Jan, a wisteria can take 8 - 10 years to flower believe it or not. Hang on in there, especially if it's showing some signs now. Don't expect much for quite a while though.
