Re: A Major Task....

Post by Lorraine on Sun 5 Apr 2009 - 23:00

I finished painting Nic's lounge and was home by about 4.00pm so I had a little time for my garden.

I got my dahlia tubers potted up, so am really hoping the frost has finished. If some is expected, I'll pop the pots in the shed. I also potted up a small ceanothus that was a freebie from the garden centre. My mint and chives are now in bigger pots and then I got all the pots put in place where I want them.

Then, I did a bit of weeding as I found some real woody one's that had taken hold and are only showing now with the growth that I know isn't the plants, then I ran the hoe over everything too.

The plants all have signs of growth now. Mr Green The peony and the iris that Kim sent me are doing well but all the leaves on the erigynon have wilted and died. I know this can happen so I'll wait another week or so to see if it's taken or not. Fingers crossed.

I have been in contact with the Jersey Nursery where I got some of my roses as there still doesn't seem to be any signs of new buds anywhere. They've asked me to grow them for another two weeks and if nothing happens, then get back to them. So, that's something I suppose. If they don't take, then I shall have to spend more money and buy some container roses to take their places. I'm not too confident about my lily bulbs that they sent either. Some of the Oriental ones seemed a bit mush and I had to remove some of the scales. Still, there's time yet for them to show.

So, girls. It's just about done and ready for the final 'finished' photos. Mr Green Then it's just a case of sitting back and waiting for all the flowers to come out. Wink

Post by Lorraine on Mon 6 Apr 2009 - 18:49

Been out the front today. Mr Green

All the rubbish that was out back then went out front, is now at the tip and the skip has gone too, so the car is safely back on the drive. Mr Green

I went out to weed the bed under my front window and was pleasantly surprised. The roses are doing well out there, all shooting quite happily. When I had to dig up some rather large weeds I also dug up some rather large tubers!!!!! I thought I'd planted dahlias, but had forgotten about them as the front wasn't really looked after too well last year either and there certainly wasn't any flowers there.

I noticed one that is obviously a dahlia about 2 inches above ground anyway, so I was careful around that. Then, I dug up no less than 5 great big lumps of tubers. Anyway, after removing some gunge and rotting stuff, I saw that every one of them had some little white shoots emerging. Anyway, I've planted them again, evenly spaced and marked the spots. Here's hoping that now they're not being strangled by weeds, they will recover from my beating and grow. Mr Green It'll be a proper treat for me if they do. 6 lovely dahlia plants in front of my roses....love 'em. Very Happy

Oh I love Dahlias as well but do not like the earywigs, hubbys grandad grew them and used to bring them round to Hubbys mums house and she used to have to take them out the back and shake all the earywigs out but they never all came out, I was for ever looking all round the house if I saw something moving at the corner of my eye, I think I hate them more than I did spiders, been told to many awful tales of what they do.

I'm the same Billie, can't bring myself to like them because of the earwigs. What is it that old men see in them? They all grow them on their allotments.
Lorraine you have been so hard at work in yours, you will soon be reaping or looking at the rewards, I'll get what I deserve, a bunch of weeds to look at if I get time to sit out.

Re: A Major Task....

It looks terrific, and you know what I like about it, it's a real garden, with all the lumps and bumps and odd bits you get, not some little flat square, so you've had to work with what you have and make a bed here and a tub there and another bit round the corner, there's something nice everywhere you look.
The pots by the conservatory look lovely already and you can see that the rest will be beautiful in it's season. The bird house is really pretty too.
A job more than well done I say.
